  • Details

A ball mill is a high-fine grinding machine used in industrial production. It is a device that grinds materials by making grinding media and materials fall from a certain height in a rotating cylinder, generating extrusion, impact, and abrasion effects.

The following is a detailed introduction:

    Basic Information

Invention History: In 1891, the Frenchmen Konow and Davidson applied for a patent for the first continuous  ball mill to the German Patent Office. China began to design and manufacture ball mill equipment independently in 1958 and achieved serialized design in 1966.

Composition: It is mainly composed of feeding part, discharging part, rotating part, and driving part (reducer, small transmission gear, motor, electric control, etc.). The hollow shaft is made of cast steel, the inner lining is replaceable, the large rotating gear is processed by casting and hobbing, and the inner wall of the cylinder is inlaid with wear-resistant linings.

    Working Principle

The main body of the ball mill is a horizontally placed low-speed rotating cylinder. The cylinder is filled with many grinding media, which are generally steel balls, and can also be steel columns, steel bars, pebbles, gravel, ceramic balls, etc. When the ball mill rotates, the grinding media adhere to the lining surface of the inner wall of the cylinder due to the inertial centrifugal force and rotate with the cylinder. When they are carried to a certain height, they fall freely under the action of gravity. At the same time, during the rotation of the cylinder, the grinding media also produce sliding and rolling, so there is a grinding effect between the grinding media, the lining, and the materials. The material is continuously fed at the feeding end, and due to the height difference of the material surface between the feeding end and the discharging end, the material slowly flows from the feeding end to the discharging end to complete the grinding operation.

    Classification

By Cylinder Shape: It can be divided into short cylinder ball mills with a length-diameter ratio of 1-2,  ball mills with a length-diameter ratio of 2-7, and conical ball mills with a length-diameter ratio of 0.25-1.0.

By Operation Method: It can be divided into batch ball mills and continuous ball mills. The latter can be further divided into open-circuit ball mills, closed-circuit ball mills, and wind-swept ball mills.

By Discharge Method: It can be divided into central discharge ball mills, which can be further divided into overflow ball mills and lattice ball mills.

    Applications

The ball mill can be wet or dry ground and can be used to process various mineral raw materials. It is widely used in cement, silicate products, new building materials, refractory materials, fertilizers, ferrous and non-ferrous metal beneficiation, glass ceramics, and other production industries.
