Green Cycle: Recycling and Processing of PCB Boards and Integrated Circuits

#Industry ·2026-01-02

With the rapid iteration and popularity of electronic products, the number of discarded printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated circuits (ICs) has surged. How to efficiently and environmentally friendly process these electronic waste has become an important issue of global concern. PCBs and integrated circuits contain valuable metals such as gold, silver, and copper, as well as harmful substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium. If discarded or improperly handled, they will cause serious harm to soil, water, and human health. Therefore, scientific recycling and resource utilization are imperative. At present, the recycling and processing of PCBs and integrated circuits are mainly divided into three stages: physical disassembly, chemical extraction, and green recycling. First, metal, plastic, and ceramic materials are separated through mechanical crushing and sorting techniques; then, precious metals are extracted using hydrometallurgy or high-temperature smelting methods; finally, the residuals are treated harmlessly and promoted to re-enter the production chain. Some advanced processes can also achieve component detection and refurbishment, extending their lifespan. Promoting the standardized recycling of PCBs and integrated circuits not only helps reduce electronic waste pollution, but also alleviates the pressure on mineral resources and promotes the development of a circular economy. As consumers, we should actively hand over discarded electronic products to formal recycling institutions, while enterprises also need to strengthen green design to improve the recyclability of products at the source. Only by aligning technology and environmental protection can we achieve a sustainable future.
