Wastewater Treatment in Lead-Acid Battery Crushing and Recycling: Uphold Environmental Standards, Optimize Recycling Practices

#Industry ·2026-02-04

The wastewater generated during lead-acid battery crushing and recycling contains heavy metals such as lead and cadmium, as well as acid-alkali pollutants. Improper treatment can easily cause soil and groundwater contamination, and directly affect the environmental compliance of enterprises. Therefore, proper wastewater treatment has become a key link in the green development of the industry.

For the treatment of such wastewater, the core principles are classified collection, separate treatment by quality, and discharge up to standard. Floor washing water and process wastewater in the production area should be collected separately, not mixed with domestic sewage, and disposed of through dedicated lead-containing wastewater treatment facilities. The treatment process mostly adopts a combination of chemical precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, membrane separation, ion exchange and other methods to accurately remove heavy metal ions, control the pH value within the up-to-standard range of 6-9, and strictly limit the lead discharge to 0.5mg/L.
In the meantime, meticulous management and control should be implemented throughout the wastewater treatment process: construct anti-seepage and anti-corrosion treatment structures, install online monitoring equipment for indicators such as pH and lead and connect them to environmental protection departments to monitor water quality and quantity in real time; keep detailed records of chemical dosing, equipment operation and water quality testing. The lead-containing sludge produced by wastewater treatment is hazardous waste and must be properly disposed of by qualified units to prevent secondary pollution.

Nowadays, wastewater treatment in the lead-acid battery recycling industry has shifted from "end-of-pipe treatment" to "source control + process optimization + resource recycling". While achieving up-to-standard treatment, many enterprises have realized wastewater reuse, which not only reduces water consumption costs but also improves resource utilization efficiency. Upholding the environmental bottom line of wastewater treatment is not only a basic requirement for enterprises to operate in compliance with regulations, but also an inevitable path to promote the closed-loop development of the lead-acid battery recycling industry and achieve a win-win situation of ecological and economic benefits.
