Under the rapid development of modern electronic technology, the number of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated circuits (ICs) being discarded as the core components of electronic devices is increasing dramatically. How to handle these electronic waste efficiently and environmentally has become an important issue in resource recycling and environmental protection. PCBs and ICs contain a large amount of precious metals (such as gold, silver, palladium, etc.), copper, and rare materials, as well as harmful substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium. If they are randomly discarded or buried, it will not only cause resource waste but also lead to serious pollution of soil, water, and ecosystems. Therefore, scientific recycling and processing not only have economic value but are also essential for achieving sustainable development. At present, recycling and processing mainly involves the following steps: 1. Disassembly and classification: Separate electronic components, metal substrates, and plastic parts on PCBs by manual or automated methods to ensure that different types of materials are processed specifically. 2. Physical crushing and sorting: Use mechanical methods to crush PCBs into fine particles, and then separate metal and non-metal components through techniques such as magnetic sorting and eddy current sorting. 3. Chemical extraction and refining: Use hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy processes to extract precious metals and non-ferrous metals from metal-rich bodies, achieving high-purity recycling. 4. Harmless treatment: Purify the waste gas and waste liquid generated during the process to ensure compliance with environmental standards and reduce secondary pollution. With technological advancements, green methods such as biometallurgy and supercritical fluid extraction are gradually being applied to recycling, further enhancing resource recovery rates and environmental friendliness. At the same time, many countries and regions have established comprehensive e-waste recycling systems, promoting the standardized development of the industry through policy guidance and producer responsibility extension systems. As consumers, we should actively participate in the classification and recycling of e-waste, choose formal recycling channels, and jointly contribute to the realization of a circular economy. Every proper handling of e-waste is a manifestation of our cherishing and protecting of Earth's resources.
