Waste Printed Circuit Boards: The Neglected Urban Mine with Great Value

#Industry ·2026-03-06

Waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the core components discarded from end-of-life electronic products, such as computers, mobile phones, household appliances, communication devices and industrial equipment. They are classified as electronic waste, yet also represent highly valuable recyclable resources.

Composed of resin substrates, fiberglass, copper circuits and electronic components, waste PCBs contain precious metals including gold, silver, palladium and non-ferrous metals like copper. With a much higher metal content than natural ores, they are widely known as an “urban mine” in the recycling industry.
However, waste PCBs also contain hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and flame retardants. Irregular disposal, open burning or illegal dismantling can severely pollute soil, water and air, threatening both the ecological environment and human health. Only through professional, environmentally friendly processes—including dismantling, crushing, physical separation and harmless treatment—can metals and non-metals be safely recycled.

With the rapid renewal of electronic products, waste PCBs are no longer useless waste, but a crucial link in the circular economy. Standardized recycling and scientific utilization not only create economic benefits, but also promote environmental protection and sustainable resource development.
